Exotic Plant Management Corpsmember

The AmeriCorps Exotic Plant Management Corpsmember (ages 18-25) will be placed with the National Park Service at the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway in St. Croix Falls, WI.  The riverway encompasses 92,746 acres in its authorized boundary and 230 miles of mostly free flowing river. It includes 130.5 miles of the St. Croix River, much of which forms the border between Minnesota and Wisconsin, and all 99.5 miles of its largest tributary, the Namekagon River in northwest Wisconsin. The park has diverse flora and fauna derived from a mixing of three major plant communities: prairie, northern hardwoods and boreal forest, primarily in a riverine setting.
While the position is based in St. Croix Falls Wisconsin, field season travel to up to 11 National Parks located in Minnesota, Michigan, Indiana, and Wisconsin (Late April to Mid-October) will be extensive.  Primary duties will support high park priority invasive plant management and vegetation restoration practices in Great Lakes Exotic Plant Management Team Network National Parks.  Interns will assist with manual and chemical plant control, seeding, equipment maintenance, data collection, data QAQC, report writing, identification of native and nonnative plants, outreach and education, and management planning.  Members must be able to safely operate power and hand tools, chainsaws, small equipment and trucks pulling trailers. 
This is a full-time commitment for a year-long AmeriCorps service term. The member will receive a monthly stipend and an education award upon successful completion of the term that may be used for education expenses or to repay qualified student loans.
Term dates and schedule:
  • Term: January 16-December 11, 2020
  • Schedule: Full-time, Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. typical.
Stipend and award:
  • Monthly stipend: $1690
  • Education award: $6095 upon successful completion of term
Location: Housing is not provided by the Corps. Member must secure their own housing near service location.

  • Good mechanical skills
  • College course work or degree in Natural Resources related field
  • Plant identification skills
  • Ability to obtain and maintain herbicide applicator licenses in Wisconsin and Michigan.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in oral and written formats
  • Detail oriented 
  • Ability to demonstrate safe workplace practice
  • 18-25 years old.
  • Must be a US Citizen, US National or Lawful Permanent Resident Alien of the US.
  • Must pass the National Sex Offender Public Registry and criminal history check. “Pass” is defined as no positive hits on the NSOPR and no history of violent offenses on the criminal history check.
  • Full term of service must be completed in order to receive the education award.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and safe driving record (no major moving violations or DUI’s in the past five years).
