The AmeriCorps Individual Placement positions (ages 18-30) are based at various locations in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Under the direct guidance of a project supervisor, the corpsmember will assist with a variety of projects to expand the capacity and reach of the partner agency. See specific position descriptions for greater detail before applying. Up to 15-20% of the service term is dedicated to technical and personal skills training.

This is a full-time commitment for a year-long AmeriCorps service term. The member will receive a monthly stipend and an education award upon successful completion of the term that may be used for education expenses or to repay qualified student loans.
 
Term dates and schedule:

• Term: January - December 2025
• Schedule: Full-time, Monday-Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm typical. Some evenings or weekends may be required.  

Location: Housing is not provided by the Corps. Member must secure their own housing near service location.

Open Positions: 

GIS Specialist Positions

Planning and Development Specialist (located in Saint Paul, MN): This position will assist DNR staff with the development of strategic plans, environmental review documents, legislative studies, research, and evaluation. This position will also provide a support role to the Acquisition and Development Unit, providing GIS (geographic information system) and GPS (global positioning system) support to park and trail development projects and cultural resource field work, and database management for asset management.

Off-Highway Vehicle Specialist (located in Saint Paul, MN): The purpose of this position is to strategize, support, and implement ways to strengthen the 1,000 miles of Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) that the DNR oversees.

Mapping Specialist (located in Saint Paul, MN): This position serves to build the capacity of important public service work at the DNR in the Division of Parks and Trails (PAT).  Under the direct guidance of a MN DNR project advisor, this position will primarily serve to assist DNR staff with a diverse set of mapping and outreach projects for Minnesota State Parks and Trails.

Inventory Forester and GIS Specialist (located in Grand Rapids, MN): The purpose of this position is to work with MN DNR to manage urban street tree inventory by collecting field data, contacting landowners, and analyzing data collected. 

Utility Mapping Specialist (located in Saint Paul, MN): This purpose of this position is to implement a new GIS based utility mapping project. Activities include field-collection, database, and in-office archival record work.

Outreach Specialist Positions

Legacy Outreach Specialist (located in Saint Paul, MN):  The purpose of this position is to strategize, support, and implement ways to include the public in decision-making processes regarding use of the MN DNR Parks and Trails Legacy Funds and to support efforts of the Parks and Trails Legacy Advisory Committee to advance the 25-year Parks and Trails Legacy Plan.

Communications Outreach Specialist (located in Saint Paul, MN): The purpose of the Communications Outreach Specialist is to assist with development and improvement of the DNR’s Scientific and Natural Areas (SNA) Program and Native Prairie Bank (NPB) Outreach Initiatives relating to communications, primarily social media and email marketing.

Aquatic Invasive Species Communications Specialist (located in Saint Paul, MN): This position serves to build the capacity of important public service work at the DNR in the Division of Ecological and Water Resources Aquatic Invasive Species Program. This position will primarily serve to assist in communications and outreach needs of the invasive species program. 

Agriculture and Outreach Specialist (located in Windom, MN):  Provides assistance to the MAWQCP certification process which may include farm water quality assessments, field visits and data collection, producer and/or landowner interviews service and groundwater monitoring programs, wetland and watercourse inventories and assessments; prepare documents for cost-share and easement programs; conduct field surveys and site inspections and prepare reports; and coordinate and conduct educational programs and activities.

Central Forestry Support: This position will provide support to Forestry Region Staff Specialists in silviculture, native plant community surveys, forest health, state lands timber, public outreach, urban and community forestry and fire operations.

Data Specialist:  This member will work with the MN DNR IT dept and MN Parks and Trails staff and local parks and trails staff to complete the information for Park and Trails management areas in our EIS data base.

Web Specialist: This position will assist with the development, growth and daily management of the public website, Intranet and other digital media for the MN DNR Parks and Trails Division. The individual will also be involved in the preparation to develop a digital photo management system.

Marketing Specialist: The position will assist the parks and trails Marketing Coordinator in evaluating, researching, and implementing updates for the Hiking and Passport Clubs. IP will also provide support on various marketing initiatives.

Volunteer Outreach Specialist: The member will support MN Plant Watch efforts by assisting with volunteer outreach and training, creating newsletters or plant identification tip sheets, and teaching volunteers data collection methods and organizing training events. The member will also assist with data collection and management as well as creating maps for volunteer assignments, data entry, revising field protocols, and lab projects like cleaning seeds for long-term banking. 

Water Specialist Positions

Water Monitoring Specialist (located in Saint Paul, MN): This position serves to build the capacity of important public service work at the DNR in the Division of Ecological and Water Resources Aquatic Invasive Species Program. This position will primarily serve to assist in water monitoring which includes stream flow measurement, hydrologic equipment installation, surveying, assisting well drilling, data entry, and processing.  

Aquatic Invasive Species Specialist (located in Saint Paul, MN): This position serves to build the capacity of important public service work at the DNR in the Division of Ecological and Water Resources Aquatic Invasive Species Program under the guidance of the Invasive Species Specialist. This position will primarily serve to assist in the prevention of the spread and promotion of management of invasive species. Activities include data collection, physical and biological lake investigations, aquatic surveys, pre and post herbicide treatment evaluations, and data entry.

Aquatic Plant Management Specialist (located in Saint Paul, MN): This position serves in the MN DNR to support the Aquatic Plant Management team in permitting, site inspections, pesticide inspections, and plant surveys related to aquatic plant control.

Clean Water Specialist (located in Maplewood, MN): This position will assist with terrestrial invasive species, aquatic invasive species monitoring and prevention, soil health projects, and gather input on best practices and provide education materials on water resources.

Clean Water Specialist (Located in Carlton County, MN): The member will assist in water monitoring projects across the region as well as the installation and maintenance of various projects ranging from pollinator planting, to invasive species removal, to shoreline restoration.  Additionally, the member will be assisting with are general outreach and media creation including event promotion through various media channels.

Habitat Position: 
Remote Sensing Field Technician Specialist: This project involves participation in a variety of research and monitoring projects led by Monarch Joint Venture in the Midwest. Monitoring may include remote sensing (flying drones, processing images, supporting algorithm development) or field surveys.
Qualifications:

• Familiarity with MS Office software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
• Willingness to learn and adapt to changing plans, work, and weather conditions
• Commitment to upholding Corps values of safety, justice, stewardship, community and leadership.
• Dedication to complete the full term of AmeriCorps service
• Valid driver’s license and safe driving record (no major moving violations or DUI’s in the past five years)
• Preferred: College coursework and/or degree in a relevant field

Requirements:

• 18-30 years old.
• Must be a US Citizen, US National, or Lawful Permanent Resident Alien of the US
• Must pass a criminal history check consisting of a National Sex Offender Public Website check, a state criminal history check, and a fingerprint-based FBI check. Passing the criminal history check is defined as no positive hits on the NSOPW and no history of violent offenses on the state or FBI checks.
• High school degree, GED, or willingness to work towards obtaining a GED
