Individual Placement

Various Locations, MN

The AmeriCorps Individual Placement positions (ages 18-35) are based at various locations in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Under the direct guidance of a project supervisor, the corpsmember will assist with a variety of projects to expand the capacity and reach of the partner agency. See specific position descriptions for greater detail before applying. Up to 15-20% of the service term is dedicated to technical and personal skills training.

This is a full-time commitment for a year-long AmeriCorps service term. The member will receive a monthly stipend and an education award upon successful completion of the term that may be used for education expenses or to repay qualified student loans.
 
Term dates and schedule:

  • Term: January - December 2024
  • Schedule: Full-time, Monday-Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm typical. Some evenings or weekends may be required.  

Location: Housing is not provided by the Corps. Member must secure their own housing near service location.

Positions

GIS Specialist Positions
  • Planning and Development Specialist (located in Saint Paul, MN): This position will assist DNR staff with the development of strategic plans, environmental review documents, legislative studies, research, and evaluation. This position will also provide a support role to the Acquisition and Development Unit, providing GIS (geographic information system) and GPS (global positioning system) support to park and trail development projects and cultural resource field work, and database management for asset management.
  • Off-Highway Vehicle Specialist (located in Saint Paul, MN): The purpose of this position is to strategize, support, and implement ways to strengthen the 1,000 miles of Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) that the DNR oversees.
  • Mapping Specialist (located in Saint Paul, MN): This position serves to build the capacity of important public service work at the DNR in the Division of Parks and Trails (PAT).  Under the direct guidance of a MN DNR project advisor, this position will primarily serve to assist DNR staff with a diverse set of mapping and outreach projects for Minnesota State Parks and Trails.
  • Inventory Forester and GIS Specialist (located in Grand Rapids, MN): The purpose of this position is to work with MN DNR to manage urban street tree inventory by collecting field data, contacting landowners, and analyzing data collected. 
  • Utility Mapping Specialist (located in Saint Paul, MN): This purpose of this position is to implement a new GIS based utility mapping project. Activities include field-collection, database, and in-office archival record work.
Outreach Specialist Positions
Water Specialist Positions
  • Water Monitoring Specialist (located in Saint Paul, MN): This position serves to build the capacity of important public service work at the DNR in the Division of Ecological and Water Resources Aquatic Invasive Species Program. This position will primarily serve to assist in water monitoring which includes stream flow measurement, hydrologic equipment installation, surveying, assisting well drilling, data entry, and processing.  
  • Aquatic Invasive Species Specialist (located in Saint Paul, MN): This position serves to build the capacity of important public service work at the DNR in the Division of Ecological and Water Resources Aquatic Invasive Species Program under the guidance of the Invasive Species Specialist. This position will primarily serve to assist in the prevention of the spread and promotion of management of invasive species. Activities include data collection, physical and biological lake investigations, aquatic surveys, pre and post herbicide treatment evaluations, and data entry.
  • Clean Water Specialist (located in Maplewood, MN): This position will assist with terrestrial invasive species, aquatic invasive species monitoring and prevention, soil health projects, and gather input on best practices and provide education materials on water resources.
  • Aquatic Plant Management Specialist (located in Saint Paul, MN): This position serves in the MN DNR to support the Aquatic Plant Management team in permitting, site inspections, pesticide inspections, and plant surveys related to aquatic plant control.
     

Qualifications:

  • Positive attitude and strong commitment to service and community work
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to work both in an office setting and outside field work
  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written formats
  • Creative thinking and problem solving
  • College coursework and/or degree in a relevant field

Requirements:

  • 18-35 years old.
  • Must be a US Citizen, US National or Lawful Permanent Resident Alien of the US.
  • Must pass the National Sex Offender Public Registry and criminal history check. “Pass” is defined as no positive hits on the NSOPR and no history of violent offenses on the criminal history check.
  • Full term of service must be completed in order to receive the education award.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and safe driving record (no major moving violations or DUI’s in the past five years).
