Youth Outdoors Crew Member

AmeriCorps Youth Outdoors Members (ages 18-25) perform natural resource restoration projects with a crew of their adult peers and engage Twin Cities youth in after-school service projects and environmental education. In spring and fall, corpsmembers lead crews of Twin Cities’ youth participants (ages 15-18) in environmental education and community service projects after school and on Saturdays. In summer, crews complete natural resource restoration projects. Corpsmembers inspire youth, conduct community outreach and restore habitat in partnership with resource management agencies, working alongside conservation professionals.
 
This is a full-time commitment for a year-long AmeriCorps service term. The Crew Member will receive a monthly stipend and an education award upon successful completion of the term that may be used for education expenses or to repay qualified student loans.
 
Term dates and schedule:
  • Term: late May – December 15, 2017
  • Schedule: Full-time, at least 40 hours per week
    • Monday-Thursday, 7:00 a.m.-5:30 p.m. typical during training and in summer
    • Tuesday – Saturday, varied hours, typical during spring and fall youth programming.
 
Stipend and award:
  • Monthly stipend: $1355
  • Education award: $2887 upon successful completion of term
 
Locations: Housing is not provided by the Corps. Member must secure their own housing near service location.

Qualifications:
  • Work hard in an outdoor setting in adverse conditions for a minimum of 40 hrs/week
  • Work with diverse youth in conservation, education and recreation settings
  • Foster strong work habits, environmental ethics, youth leadership and team unity
  • Educate and inspire the next generation by leading interpretive programs
  • Present to large groups in an outdoor setting, sometimes consisting of over 60 people of all ages
  • Learn skills in youth development and/or natural resource management; 15-20% of the service term is dedicated to technical and personal-skill training
  • Display a positive attitude, interest in service and community work and desire to make a difference
 
Requirements:
  • 18-25 years old.
  • Able to perform the Essential Service Functions 40 hours/week:
    • Long (10 hour) days of shoveling, digging and swinging heavy tools repetitively
    • Long (10 hour) days of chainsaw / brush saw work
    • Heavy lifting, bending, and carrying up to 50 pounds
    • Walking and working on steep or uneven terrain
    • Working in extremes of heat or cold
    • Working, eating, and camping outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Must be a US Citizen, US National, or Lawful Permanent Resident Alien of the US.
  • Must pass the National Sex Offender Public Registry and criminal history check. “Pass” is defined as no positive hits on the NSOPR and no history of violent offenses on the criminal history check.
  • Flexible schedule to accommodate after-school and weekend hours, as well as possible week-long out-of-town projects and emergency response.
  • Must successfully pass medical review process.
  • Full term of service must be completed in order to receive the education award.
